Home / Conditions We Treat / Meniscus Tear
The menisci are C-shaped cushions in the knee. Tears are common in sports and with age, and can cause pain, swelling and locking.
Each knee has two menisci that absorb shock and protect the cartilage. A meniscus can tear with a twisting injury in young people or through degeneration in older adults.
Treatment depends on the tear type, location and symptoms. When possible, repairing the meniscus is preferred to removing it.
Treatment is tailored to your diagnosis, symptoms, activity level and goals.

Common questions about meniscus tear.
Small tears in the outer region with good blood supply may heal. Many degenerative tears settle with therapy even if they do not heal.
When the tear is repairable, preserving the meniscus is generally preferred because it protects the cartilage.
It depends on whether the meniscus was repaired or trimmed. Repair needs a longer protected recovery.
